Before his retirement, Ben had a successful working life as a top income earner in a high-profile
career. Ben retired with a comfortable nest egg but his alcohol dependency and associated poor relationship choices resulted in the loss
of his wealth, self-esteem and core relationships. He became overwhelmed with grief and
loss, which in turn exacerbated his dependency on alcohol.
After months of working together Ben was making good progress in restoring his life and
had achieved his goal to stop drinking alcohol. However, he still had an expensive daily
smoking habit that meant he could not afford his dream – to travel to London to give his
daughter away at her wedding.
Together Ben and his worker Mark put in place a client-motivated action plan
to enable Ben to give up smoking as a final phase
of his recovery. He set up a bank account to
deposit the funds he would usually have used
to purchase his 40 cigarettes each day. It
was such a wonderful moment when he
purchased his airline ticket and his dream to
give his daughter away came true.
Ben stayed on in England for an extra three
months after his daughter’s wedding and
while he is still in recovery he is doing really
well with a strong relapse prevention plan
in place. He stays in contact with Mark and Ben’s is one
story of many where we have seen meaningful
